By Michelle Smith McDonald, '90 Journalism

San José State University was recognized in February 2025 as an R2 research institution, achieving the coveted status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This designation marks a significant milestone in the university’s academic and research growth.

This is not merely a label. It is a testament to the outstanding work of our faculty, staff and students, and it marks SJSU’s formal emergence as a national research university.

“We have expanded interdisciplinary collaborations, launched new academic programs and continue to lead in high-impact areas such as climate resilience, health equity and artificial intelligence,” says President Cynthia Teniente-Matson. “Perhaps most importantly, this designation creates real and tangible benefits for our students. It strengthens the value of their degrees, increases access to research opportunities and expands the support networks and academic pathways that position them for success in graduate school, industry and public service.”
