How has SJSU helped you build a blueprint for your career?

BIG IDEA

BIG IDEA

Decades before San José State University became the transformative R2 research institution that it is today, it was the San José Normal School, the first California State University and the first public university on the West Coast. In order for it to blossom and evolve, early campus administrators had to hire architects, engineers and planners to design blueprints to envision the school’s future. Without a clear outline or plan, the San José State we know and love today would not exist.

The path to higher education is in itself a blueprint. Each class, department, major or minor, undergraduate or graduate degree is a stepping stone. For this issue’s Big Idea, we asked members of our Spartan community to answer the same question:

How has SJSU helped you build a blueprint for your career?

Students speak

Katelyn Gambarin

'26 Political Science, 2025-26 president, Associated Students Board of Directors

“I’d like to work in the public sector, either as an elected official or to give back in some capacity. Being involved in Associated Students (AS), as well as our Department of Political Science, has really played an instrumental role in creating that blueprint for me. AS has provided me with many opportunities that have helped me cultivate a lot of skills needed for leadership, whether that’s public speaking, organization or teamwork.

“I’m really grateful to apply those skills in various ways. As for the Department of Political Science, the professors and lecturers are just so incredibly supportive. I feel like the department is a hidden gem within our university. I’m really grateful to the faculty and lecturers who have just done an incredible job teaching us and using their real-life experiences to inform their teaching."

Wayne Jopanda

Assistant professor of sociology and interdisciplinary social sciences

“In my first year as an assistant professor, SJSU supported me by providing a space and process to envision the type of scholar-activist and ethnic studies educator I hope to be. From my first month, I found a passionate community of students, colleagues and community members willing to collaborate towards a collective vision for Asian American Studies and Ethnic Studies. My Asian American Studies program, department and dean have been extremely supportive and have ensured I was never feeling isolated or alone.

“Collaborating with spaces such as the Africana, Asian American, Chicano, & Native American Studies Center (AAACNA), the Filipino Alumni Network, and great student organizations like the League of Filipino Students and Akbayan SJSU has been pivotal in shaping my praxis as a scholar. I am thankful for the mentorship, the community support and the welcoming energy I have received since starting as an assistant professor at SJSU."

Associate professor of urban and regional planning, director of the Spatial Analytics and Visualization Institute (SAVI) and Master of Science in Geographic Information Science (MS GISc) program

“At SJSU, I’ve built a career focused on using spatial data science to address equity in urban development. My work on Affordable Transit-Oriented Development (A-TOD) introduced a new scoring and classification framework to guide housing policy in California’s High-Quality Transit Areas. Through founding the Spatial Analytics and Visualization Institute (SAVI) and launching the MS in GI Science program, SJSU has enabled me to translate research into actionable strategies for more inclusive and data-informed planning."

Khristine Lugo

’24 MPA, director of special events

“San José State University has been the cornerstone of my professional journey. What began as a role supporting San José State Athletics evolved into a fulfilling career in event management that SJSU has helped shape every step of the way. Through hands-on roles across departments and major university events, I have grown my leadership, planning and organizational skills in real time.

“Earning my master’s in public administration at SJSU further deepened my understanding of public service and institutional operations, giving me the confidence and knowledge to lead high-impact events like President Teniente-Matson’s investiture and large-scale community engagements. The support and trust I have received from mentors, colleagues and campus partners have empowered me not only to build a career here, but also help shape the SJSU experience for others."

“San José State University has been instrumental in shaping my career path by offering both dynamic opportunities and a supportive environment for growth. What stands out most about SJSU is the culture of continuous learning. No two days are ever the same — there are always new challenges that keep the work both engaging and intellectually stimulating. I find myself constantly growing, not just in technical competencies, but also in adaptability and problem-solving.

“Additionally, SJSU’s commitment to professional development has been a cornerstone of my career progression. The university consistently provides access to valuable training and development programs that empower staff to grow within their roles and prepare for future opportunities. This investment in employee success has helped me envision and actively build a clear, upward trajectory in my career. SJSU has given me the tools, experiences and encouragement to develop a meaningful and fulfilling career blueprint."

’17 BFA Graphic Design

“Through the BFA graphic design program at SJSU, I gained the creative skills and discipline to approach design as a form of problem-solving, while also building meaningful connections with professors and classmates — connections that later opened the door to many professional opportunities. I also deeply value my time as a student intern for the University Marketing and Communications team, which shifted my focus from print to UI/UX design and gave me a firsthand look at the impact of my work in higher education, particularly the importance of creating accessible and inclusive experiences. That experience ultimately led me to continue working in higher education, a path I hadn't originally imagined for myself, but one I'm deeply grateful to have found."
