Dr. Larry Napolitano
Larry Napolitano’s journey from an auto shop classroom to a thriving career in dentistry is one of perseverance, mentorship and generosity. His story is a testament to the power of education and the pivotal moments that shaped his future. Now, as a dedicated donor to San José State University, he is committed to supporting students at critical junctures in their academic and professional paths.
A new path
As a high school student growing up in Milpitas, Napolitano, ’80 Biochemistry, enrolled in a trade school, training to become an auto mechanic. It wasn’t until his junior year that he realized the path wasn’t for him. When he expressed his desire to explore other opportunities, his counselor advised him to stay the course — finish his automotive elective, take a few more classes and graduate.
A turning point came in his senior year when he had to take a standardized test alone in a quiet room. The exam, which he hadn’t even known about, was meant to assess strengths and serve as an exit requirement for high school. Though he hadn’t been deeply engaged in his coursework, something within him pushed him to explore further educational opportunities.
Finding his way to SJSU
Determined to continue his education, he enrolled at Evergreen Valley College and then transferred to San José State University. From there, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry in 1980. His time at SJSU provided a strong foundation for his future studies, leading him to the University of California, San Francisco, for dental school. His experience at UCSF, with the college’s dedication to service and humanitarian efforts, deeply resonated with him. His connection to the institution became even more personal when his wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1994, and UCSF provided exceptional care.
A commitment to giving back
Reflecting on his journey, Napolitano recognizes that key moments — and key individuals — made all the difference. Without the encouragement and guidance of mentors who believed in him, his story might have taken a very different turn. Now, he wants to ensure today’s students have access to the same kind of life-changing support.
"My educational experience has taught me that it is of tremendous benefit to find those around you who embody excellence, and then work with them and emulate their spirit," Napolitano says. "As you move through your life and career, continue to surround yourself with people of character, and you will be successful in ways you had not imagined."
Inspired by San José State faculty members, he has committed an estate gift to SJSU that will assist students facing pivotal decisions about their future. His estate gift will ensure that students have access to the guidance and resources they need to pursue their dreams.
“I want my funds to go to students who are at inflection points in their lives, making important decisions,” Napolitano says. The Dr. Larry and Valerie Napolitano Endowed Student Support Fund will support College of Science programs that focus on critical student transitions. The college’s mentoring, advising and counseling efforts are designed to assist students as they enter as first-year or transfer students, seek transformational research and internship experiences, build a sense of belonging and develop the professional skills needed to succeed beyond SJSU — just as Larry once did with the support of SJSU faculty.
Mentorship in Action
Beyond his financial contributions, Napolitano also personally mentors SJSU students. In June 2024, he welcomed three pre-dental students from SJSU’s Pre-Dental Society to his office, providing them with firsthand insights into the dental profession. He discussed pathways to dental school, the business aspects of running a practice and the importance of mentorship.

The Dr. Larry and Valerie Napolitano Endowments
The Dr. Larry and Valerie Napolitano Endowment will support the teaching, research and creative activities of College of Science faculty of the highest academic and professional caliber, as determined by the dean. The endowment will supplement salaries to enhance the quality of instruction and will provide support for travel and research for faculty and student research assistants at the dean’s discretion.
The Dr. Larry and Valerie Napolitano Endowed Student Support Fund will also support College of Science programming focused on critical student transitions. This mentoring, advising and counseling function is designed to ensure students receive support as they enter the college as first-year or transfer students, seek transformational research and internship experiences, build a sense of belonging and develop the professional skills necessary to succeed beyond San José State University.
A Lasting Impact
Napolitano’s generosity extends far beyond financial support. His dedication to mentorship and his commitment to ensuring students receive the guidance they need are helping to shape the future of countless Spartans. By investing in the next generation, he is ensuring that others — just like him — will find their way, even if they start in an unexpected place.
San José State University is honored to recognize Napolitano’s contributions, knowing that his legacy will continue to uplift and inspire students for years to come.
A testament to the power of surrounding yourself with excellence — his team supports and enhances his work every day.
