King Library - AI Librarian

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library at San José State University stands as a beacon of AI-driven innovation and support for the academic community. In February 2025, the library appointed its first artificial intelligence librarian, Sharesly Rodriguez, '18 MLIS, to spearhead the integration and development of AI technologies within the library's services. Under Rodriguez's leadership, the library introduced KingbotGPT, a retrieval-augmented chatbot that provides real-time assistance to patrons by answering questions and directing them to relevant research guides, databases and tutorials. This tool ensures 24/7 engagement, complementing live reference services and enhancing user interaction with the library's extensive resources. Additionally, Rodriguez leads a grant-funded project analyzing the landscape of responsible AI across California's higher education institutions, aiming to inform future policies and frameworks. Through these initiatives, the King Library exemplifies SJSU's commitment to fostering ethical AI adoption and equipping its community with cutting-edge tools and knowledge.

KingbotGPT

KingbotGPT is an experimental AI chatbot created by the San José State University Library's artificial intelligence team.

As the newest iteration of the original After-Hours Kingbot Chatbot, it continues to support SJSU students when reference librarians are unavailable.

Outside live chat service hours, KingbotGPT steps in to provide essential library information and assistance. Need to know how to borrow a laptop? Looking for pointers on finding research? Kingbot can have a response in seconds.
